Ribwort Plantain

Watercolour on Fabrianno Artistico

75 x 56 cms (Unframed)

In my curiosity for the diversity of the overlooked it’s not difficult for me to believe that this little perennial herb has such a troublesome reputation, despite its natural aesthetic. The ethereal simplicity of its leafless flower stems contrasted with the basal spear-shaped spreading or erect leaves are so visually absorbing. The boldness of the inflorescence, despite its size, is almost amusing in comparison to the scale of the dark green leaf.

I’ve chosen to choreograph the protective strength of the leaf with the gentle movement of the flower head in order to accentuate the absurdity of it. By overstating the negative space, the elegance of the composition helps to convince the viewer of the beauty to be found in the most unexpected places of my natural environment.
