I don’t follow a plan, I observe, put a little colour on here, there, a little bit at a time, scrutinising, assessing, comparing, adjusting and reapplying, always the same. Problem solving with watercolour can never follow a preplanned route. Sometimes it takes a bit of daring, and knowledge of colour, or that feeling of throwing myself into the unknown eg, under painting a straight flat area of Winsor blue green shade when I can only believe by chance that it will work, where I have observed the most subtle of cool changes before overlaying it with a browny, cool winey purply mix and then overlaying again with subtle changes to make this experiment create the light and shade in this darkest of components. All the time I’m comparing the colour, tone, and temperature to its neighbour because it is the relationship with its neighbour that tells the truth, and makes you believe.

The application of paint fascinates me, especially watercolour……I can become engrossed overlaying transparent colour and subtle temperature shifts that can sometimes be close to imperceptible. To keep them within the context of the painting can be challenging even more so on the smallest of forms. Sometimes I arrive at a solution through careful thought and planning but I’m open to accidents, which adds to my learning.
