Papaver

Watercolour on Kelmscott Vellum

"......the light gently touches the yellow petal as it curves away and underneath the partially withered orange petal....the delicate transparent petal tears as it stretches over the burgeoning growth and softly disappears into the casing as it moves away from the light......hairs are silhouetted against the light accentuating meaningful contrasts, the yellow petal visible through the withered skin of orange as it catches the light ……….I try to replicate how it conceals and reveals........this protective layer is paper thin and I try to describe the tension in the stretch of this fragile, delicate skin.....for me there’s more to the choice of  subject than first meets the eye and there’s more to analysing what is seen that just replicating a colour………"
